Summer 2026 in music: turn the hits into new radio discoveries

A summer hit is a starting point

On 3 September, Spotify published its 2026 summer selection, including Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas”. Its choices combine streaming figures and editorial judgment. This is a platform-specific snapshot, not a universal radio chart. Source: Spotify.

The useful question for a listener is what comes next. Replaying a familiar song can preserve a holiday memory; exploring the music around it can turn that memory into a lasting interest. Radio offers a practical way to try the second approach: listen to the surrounding programme, not just wait for a particular hit.

Follow a musical detail

Start with something you genuinely enjoy. Is it a storytelling vocal, a relaxed rhythm, a striking guitar sound or a chorus that invites a crowd to join in? Choose a programme that gives that element room. A country show, a pop programme and an evening specialist slot may lead to very different discoveries.

Give each choice fifteen minutes. Write down one artist you did not already know and the name of the show. You are building a small listening trail, rather than collecting another list of famous titles.

Compare without declaring a winner

Try two stations from different places at a similar time of day. Notice what sits between the songs: introductions, local news, requests or explanations of a new release. Those details help you understand the broadcaster’s audience.

A song’s streaming success does not guarantee that a station will play it. If you want a specific recording immediately, use an authorised on-demand service; if you want an unexpected next track, let the programme continue.

Your autumn listening experiment

Keep three discoveries from the exercise. Revisit them a week later and decide which still matter to you. The best souvenir of a musical summer may be an artist who never appeared in your original playlist.

Editorial guide prepared on 14 September 2026.

Two stations to try next

Start with 181.FM — Kickin’ Country if country vocals and guitar textures caught your ear. Then switch to the pop programming of Capital FM London and notice how the pace and mood change. These are genre-based starting points, not a promise that a particular summer hit will be playing.
